The name tourmaline comes from the ancient Sinhalese word “turmali,” which was a generic term for colored gemstones.  Tourmaline comes in many different colors including black, pink and green, and often varies in color within a single crystal.  Tourmaline was highly prized by the alchemists who believed it was related to the philosopher's stone which was thought to have the ability to transmute base metals into gold.

Tourmaline is known a stone of balancing.  It is said to balance the right and left sides of the brain and also the male-female energy within the body.  Tourmaline is believed to alleviate motion sickness and improve hand-eye coordination.  Tourmaline is also associated with compassion and is said to aid in understanding oneself and others.  It is an excellent stone for therapists, counselors, healers and teachers who want to tap into deeper reserves of compassion and understanding for the people they serve.
